Chiropractic for sciatica

Settling that deep, radiating leg pain

Sciatica, referred pain, pins and needles down the leg, targeted care to calm the nerve and help you move comfortably again.

Overview

Understanding sciatica

Sciatica describes pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, often from the lower back or buttock down into the leg. It can be sharp, burning or a deep ache, sometimes with pins and needles or weakness.

It’s a symptom rather than a diagnosis, so the first job is understanding what’s irritating the nerve. Care is then built around calming that source and restoring comfortable movement.

How we help

How chiropractic care can help

We assess the lower back, pelvis and hips to find what’s loading the nerve, then use gentle, specific care to ease restriction and reduce irritation. Alongside hands-on care, simple movement guidance helps keep things settling between visits.

More about sciatica care

01

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is a type of nerve pain caused by compression, irritation or inflammation of the sciatic nerve, which extends from your lower back through your hips, buttocks and down each leg. While it’s often not serious and can improve with time, it can cause severe discomfort, pain, tingling, numbness and muscle weakness. It commonly affects one side of the body and can range from mild to debilitating, and may be triggered by issues including herniated discs, spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease.

Chiropractic care is an effective, non-invasive option for migraine sufferers. By improving spinal alignment and reducing nerve irritation, treatment can help reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines, addressing both the symptoms and the root causes.

Causes of sciatica

Sciatica can result from several conditions affecting the lower back and spine. We perform thorough assessments to identify the specific cause and create a personalised plan.

Chiropractic care is an effective, non-invasive way to manage sciatica. By addressing the underlying issues causing the pain, treatment can help restore spinal alignment, reduce nerve compression and relieve muscle tension, providing long-term relief, not just a quick fix.

Good to know

Common questions

How long does sciatica take to settle?

It varies with the cause and how long it’s been present. After assessing you we’ll give you a realistic estimate.

Should I rest or keep moving?

Usually gentle movement helps more than full rest, we’ll guide you on what’s right for your situation.

When should I be concerned?

Certain symptoms need urgent care. Part of our assessment is screening for those and referring you promptly if needed.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed to book with us.

What causes sciatica pain?

It’s typically caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve, often due to a herniated disc, spinal stenosis or other spinal conditions. The pressure irritates and inflames the nerve, causing pain, tingling, numbness and weakness in the lower back, buttocks and legs.

How long does sciatica last?

It can improve quickly with conservative care such as chiropractic care, physical therapy and self-care. Chronic cases may last longer, but with appropriate care most people recover fully or improve significantly.

Can chiropractic care cure sciatica?

It can’t guarantee a permanent cure, but it can significantly reduce pain and help manage symptoms by addressing root causes such as spinal misalignment and muscle tension. Regular adjustments can provide long-term relief and help prevent flare-ups.

Is sciatica treatment covered by health insurance?

Many health insurance plans cover chiropractic care for sciatica. We recommend checking with your provider to confirm your coverage.
